Where should the chapters of a book begin? On which page should the beginning of each part of a publication be located? The first answer we will think of is: “On the right page.” Most readers associate a book with a novel. And, for this reason, we automatically place the beginning of the chapters on the right of a book. However, chapters can start on any page you want . There is no universal rule that chapters should start on the odd page of a book. It is a “classic guideline,” as Enric Jardí says in Thus a Book is Made , but it is not the only one nor is it immutable. The key lies in the nature of the work , in its characteristics. The page on which the start of the different sections is located will depend on some factors. Among them, the kind of book it can become, how the content is structured and what design possibilities it offers. In this post I present practical examples of where to start the chapters of a publication in order to help you decide the most appropriate option for your next book. Contents show Places where chapters can begin Places, what are called places we have few: two. Considering that each sheet has two sides, we have a page on the left and another on the right, verso and recto.

In languages with the sense of writing from left to right ( dextroverse ), such as Spanish, French and English, the possibilities for opening the chapters are found in: the right page , with odd numbering; the obverse of the leaf or rectum ( folium rectum ); the left page , with even numbering; the back of the leaf or verso ( folium versum ); the double page or paired pages, the spread in InDesign; that is, the visualization of the open book. (The sheet is the paper that is used in the graphic Cell Phone Number List arts to print and that is then folded, folded, to obtain the pages of a publication. Here I use the term sheet in the sense in which InDesign does.) When working with languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, and even Japanese, the pages reverse meaning. Premises to consider before deciding where to start the chapters To analyze the beginnings of chapters, we must look at the content of the book and what clues it gives us. It must be considered that some created works become books, but there are hundreds of them that are commissioned . That is, there is no pre-existence of the content, but rather it is generated for a specific design and layout . Everything that must be assessed for one case or another exceeds what I can include in an article.

Therefore, briefly, I mention the basic aspects that we have to decompose: the structure of the work : how it is organized (parts, sections, chapters), what is its index; what other elements it presents in addition to text (tables, charts, images) and in what quantity; the hierarchy : between texts, between images and, in turn, between texts and graphic elements; the type of reading (sequential, punctual); the purpose or objective of the publication (to instruct, entertain, inform, describe, narrate, persuade, etc.); the target audience (children between and years old; adults +, undergraduate university students, etc.); the physical aspects of the printed book, such as size, number of pages, binding, weight, etc.; the competition : what and how they do with a product similar to ours. With this data we will have an idea of the presentation possibilities that the work offers; that is, what design could be developed for the content. These guidelines are used to analyze a publication in progress as well as one already made. Fragmenting and decomposing a book is an exciting experiment from which you learn a lot. Arguments and graphic examples Chapters on odd page (right) The books that stand out because the chapters start on the right page are those that demand sequential reading . That is, those that require orderly reading, from beginning to end, without omitting parts of the information. Books with continuous text stand out , but those with various graphic elements are not far behind.
